Introduction: The Death of the “Shortage Occupation List”
If you are still searching for the “Shortage Occupation List (SOL),” you are out of date. In late 2024 and throughout 2025, the UK government replaced the SOL with the Immigration Salary List (ISL).
In January 2026, the rules for the ISL are very different. Previously, being on the list gave you a 20% discount on the “going rate” for a job. That discount is gone. Today, being on the ISL only gives you a discount on the General Threshold (the minimum amount the government says anyone on a work visa must earn).
The 2026 Salary Thresholds: Standard vs. ISL
To understand why the ISL is important, look at the two main “price tags” for a UK work visa today:
- Standard Skilled Worker: You must earn at least £41,700 per year.
- ISL Job: You only need to earn at least £33,400 per year.
The “Going Rate” Rule
Even if your job is on the ISL, you must still be paid the full going rate for that specific occupation. You cannot be underpaid compared to a British worker in the same role.
Example: If the “going rate” for a Graphic Designer is £38,000, you must be paid
£38,000—even though the ISL floor is only £33,400.
Top Jobs on the 2026 Immigration Salary List
The ISL is much shorter than the old lists. It now focuses on roles that are vital to the UK’s 2026 “Industrial Strategy.”

Key TSL Jobs Include:
- IT Operations Technicians
- Electricians and Electrical Fitters
- Plumbers and Heating Installers
- Vehicle Technicians and Mechanics
Note: Workers on the TSL route are currently not allowed to bring dependants (spouses or children) to the UK.
How to Check if Your Job Qualifies
- Find your SOC Code: Ask your employer for the 4-digit Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) 2020 code.
- Check Appendix Immigration Salary List: Visit the official GOV.UK page to see if your code is listed.
- Calculate the Salary: Ensure your offer is above both the £33,400 floor and the 100%
going rate.
Why the ISL Matters for Your Visa Fee
Choosing an ISL job doesn’t just lower the salary requirement; it also lowers your Visa Application Fee.
-
-
Standard Visa (up to 3 years): ~£827
-
- ISL Visa (up to 3 years): ~£551
By choosing a role on the ISL, you and your employer can save thousands of pounds over a 5-year period.
Summary for Applicants
The 2026 ISL is a powerful tool for those who may not meet the high £41,700 standard threshold. However, with the B2 English requirement also in effect as of January 8, the barrier to entry remains high.
