Switching from Graduate to Skilled Worker Visa (2026 Step-by-Step)

The 2026 “Graduate Trap”

For many years, international students could rely on the 2-year Graduate visa (PSW) to find their feet. However, as of January 2026, the rules have tightened. Not only has the Graduate visa duration been reduced for new applicants (to 18 months for Master’s students), but the jump to a Skilled Worker visa now requires meeting the new B2 English standard and a higher salary floor.

If your Graduate visa is expiring soon, this guide explains exactly how to transition to sponsorship without leaving the UK.

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility (The 2026 Criteria)

To switch from a Graduate visa to a Skilled Worker visa from within the UK, you must meet these four mandatory “Points-Based” requirements:

1. A Licensed Sponsor

Your employer must hold a Skilled Worker Sponsor Licence. In 2026, many small businesses have stopped sponsoring due to the increased Immigration Skills Charge. Always check the official Register of Licensed Sponsors before accepting a job offer.

2. A Valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)

Once your employer agrees to sponsor you, they will issue a CoS. This is a digital reference number.

  • Important: You must apply for your visa within 3 months of receiving this number.
  • The Skill Level (RQF 6)

The job must be at RQF Level 6 (Degree level) or above. While some lower-skilled roles (RQF 3-5) are eligible if they are on the Temporary Shortage List (TSL), most graduates will need to find a professional role to qualify.

  • The English Requirement (The B2 Increase)

This is the biggest change this month. Since January 8, 2026, all “switchers” must prove English at Level B2.

  • Good News: If you have a degree from a UK university, you are exempt from

taking an English test. Your degree certificate acts as your proof.

Step 2: The “New Entrant” Salary Advantage

Most Skilled Workers in 2026 must earn at least £41,700. However, as a Graduate visa holder, you likely qualify as a “New Entrant.”

The £33,400 Rule

If you are switching from a Graduate visa, you can be paid 70% of the job’s going rate, provided it is at least £33,400 per year.

  • Condition: You can only be a “New Entrant” for a total of 4 years. This includes any time you already spent on your Graduate visa.

Example: If you spent 2 years on a Graduate visa, you can only be sponsored as a “New Entrant” for another 2 years. After that, your employer must raise your salary to the full £41,700.

Step 3: Documents You Will Need

Gathering these early is the key to a fast 2026 application:

  • Current BRP/Digital Status: Your Graduate visa must still be valid.
  • Passport: Must have at least one blank page.
  • CoS Reference Number: Provided by your employer.
  • UK Degree Certificate: To exempt you from the B2 English test.
  • Bank Statements: Showing at least £1,270 for 28 days (unless your employer “certifies maintenance” on your CoS).

Step 4: The Costs (Employee vs. Employer)

In 2026, the fees have increased to reflect inflation.

Fee Type Cost (Up to 3 Years) Who Usually Pays?
Visa Application Fee £827 The Employee
Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) £239 The Employer

Step 5: How and When to Apply

You must apply before your current Graduate visa expires.

  1. Apply Online: Use the “Switch to a Skilled Worker Visa” portal on GOV.UK.
  2. ID Check App: Most graduates can use the ‘UK Immigration: ID Check’ app on their phone to scan their BRP, meaning no trip to a visa center is needed.
  3. Wait for a Decision: Standard processing takes 8 weeks. Priority service (£500) takes 5 working days.

Common 2026 Mistake: Leaving the UK

Do not travel outside the Common Travel Area (UK, Ireland, Isle of Man) while your application is pending. If you leave the UK before a decision is made, your application is automatically withdrawn, and you may lose your right to re-enter.
